In Toronto, we only have a few months to use outdoor living spaces, but taking the time to make them beautiful is well worth both the enjoyment and the value they’ll bring to your home.
Here are some tips for making the most of your outdoor space:
1. Continue your interior style and colour scheme outside. Doing so creates a flow between the areas, and gives the feel of one seamless living space. You can do this by choosing robust, durable pieces in a similar tone to your interior furniture, with thick, luxurious cushions.
2. Bring traditionally indoor items outside. Remember that you’re not limited to just ‘outdoor decor’! Cushions, candles, and throw blankets can quickly and easily be brought inside if the weather turns.
3. Incorporate sun coverage. While the season is short, the sun is still strong! If you don’t have built-in coverage, adding an umbrella or retractable cover will ensure you and your guests are comfortable and protected.
4. Add lighting for romantic evenings outside. There are so many great outdoor lighting options these days, from string lights to lanterns, to lighting strips. If access to electricity or dealing with messy extension cords is a concern, opt for battery-operated or solar-powered lights.
Add a few cozy blankets and you’ll be able to keep using your backyard oasis well into September, and even October!
